Girls sell off their stuff for animals in need

ELYRIA TOWNSHIP — Who needs toys when there are dogs and cats out there in need of good homes?
Not two local girls. Jordyn and Emily Elliott, ages 7 and 6, have more than what they need. So, today the girls — with the help of mom, Toni Yarosh — are hosting a yard sale at their home at 43264 Dellefield Road, where many of their own toys, games, puzzles and clothes will be put up for sale.
The girls also are having a bake sale with homemade muffins, cookies, brownies and cake.
So why are two little girls so eager to make money? For a good cause, of course. They are raising Doggy Dollars and Kitty Kash for the 2008 Pledge for Pets Radiothon Contest hosted by Q104 and the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo, with all proceeds going to support the Cleveland Animal Protective League.
“That’s more important than us getting new things or buying stuff that we don’t need,” Jordyn said.
Emily agreed. She wants the money to “buy homes for the animals,” she said. “If they wouldn’t get a home, it would break their hearts,” the 6-year-old said.
The girls are not yard sale rookies. They’ve done this before, but normally they use the proceeds to buy something big that they want – like the cute swing set in the family backyard. But once the girls heard about the fundraiser on the radio, they were all for doing it, Yarosh said.
“I’ve always tried to teach them that we have to look out for those that are less fortunate. I’m happy to know they have not only listened to me, but want to do something,” Yarosh said.
This is not the family’s first attempt at animal advocacy. The family dog and cat came from Elyria and Wooster animal shelters.
Shelters and kennels are the best places to adopt animals, Jordyn said.
“Those are the ones that need the homes the most,” she said.
Just don’t fall victim to what the girls’ said they have learned.
“You can’t take them all home even though they’re really cute,” Emily said.
